Sunderland have issued a strong condemnation of the racist abuse directed at forward Brian Brobbey on social media in the wake of their hard-fought 1-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur. The club described the incident as part of an "ongoing and unacceptable" pattern, underscoring a grim reality in the modern game.

In a firm statement, the Black Cats confirmed they have reported the abuse to the Premier League, relevant social media companies, and the police, demanding "swift action" against the perpetrators. The club pledged its "full and unwavering support" to Brobbey, standing firmly with the player.

This is not an isolated case for Sunderland this season. Brobbey becomes the latest Premier League star targeted, following similar online abuse aimed at teammates Romaine Mundle and Lutsharel Geertruida. The issue was starkly highlighted last month when a match against Newcastle was paused under anti-discrimination protocols after alleged abuse toward Geertruida, leading to an arrest.

Sunderland's statement left no room for ambiguity, declaring that racism has "no place in our game or in society" and emphasizing that football must remain a safe and inclusive environment for all.

The Premier League has echoed this stance, expressing disgust at the continued online discrimination faced by players. The league has pledged to work with clubs, law enforcement, and tech platforms to identify offenders, who could face criminal convictions, football banning orders, and even jail time.

This alarming trend is reflected in data from anti-discrimination group Kick It Out, which has reported record levels of online abuse this season, casting a shadow over the sport.
