Notes and thoughts on Caleb Lomu’s first week in Foxboro, rookie minicamp, and more.

The New England Patriots' rookie class officially touched down in Foxboro this week for the first time as full-fledged members of the team, capping off a memorable three-day rookie minicamp that wrapped up Sunday. While much of the focus has been on the on-field drills and evaluations, a few behind-the-scenes stories have emerged that add a human touch to this new chapter. Let's dive into this week's edition of our Sunday Patriots Notes.

For undrafted free agent Caleb Lomu, the journey to New England began with a red-eye flight from Arizona on Wednesday night—a trip that quickly turned into a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As he boarded the American Airlines flight from Phoenix to Boston, Lomu discovered that the pilot was none other than his uncle, Curtis Tanner. What followed was a pre-flight announcement that Lomu won't soon forget.

"He's the type of uncle who is going to embarrass you a little bit. I knew it was coming," Lomu said with a grin during his official introduction on Thursday. "Of course, he got on the intercom, started talking, and brought me up to the front. He was telling everyone who I was—a proud uncle, is what he was saying."

As it turns out, Tanner had been randomly assigned the Boston flight just days earlier, making this the first time Lomu had ever flown with his uncle at the controls. The special moment was capped off with a flight pin, a small token that symbolized a much larger milestone.

But Lomu's connection to the Patriots seemed almost fated. Before the first round of the draft, his wife, Kitty, printed out a map of the United States and hung it on the wall of their home. During the draft party, friends and family placed sticky notes with their names on the locations of the teams they believed would select Lomu. Kitty, however, made a bold choice that stood out from the rest.

"My wife actually chose New England. She was the only one who put her name up on the Patriots," Lomu recalled. "That was a sign right there of where I was going to go."

Her prediction came true when the Patriots traded up in the first round to select Lomu. When the phone rang, Kitty was the first to realize what was happening. "They traded up and we had no idea. So when I got the call, there was another team up, and we're like, 'Is it them?' She actually saw it said 'M' on the caller ID," Lomu said, referencing the team's area code.

For Lomu, this week wasn't just about football—it was about family, fate, and the start of a journey that feels like it was written in the stars.
