The Mitchell High School girls golf team is celebrating a sweet victory, claiming the Marchand Cup for the fourth straight year with a commanding 14.5-to-5.5 win over Yankton at Fox Run Golf Course on Tuesday.
This wasn't just any win—it was a showcase of teamwork at its finest. The Kernels dominated the team formats, earning 9.5 out of a possible 10 points. The competition follows a Ryder Cup-style structure, blending three mini-matches into one 18-hole round: four-ball best-ball for the first six holes, a two-player scramble for holes 7-12, and individual match play to close out the round. The cup honors Rob Marchand, a Yankton grad and former Mitchell coach who passed away in 2014.
Mitchell made a statement early, sweeping all five four-ball matches for five points. The lead pairing of Maddie Childs and Brynlee Sabers set the tone with a 3-and-1 win over Ellia Homstad and Sabrina Krajewski. Mia Larson and Anna Eliason followed suit, cruising to a 3-and-2 victory against Olivia Woods and Josslyn Elwood.
The scramble holes were nearly as impressive, with the Kernels taking 4.5 out of five points. Childs and Sabers edged their match 1-up on the final hole, while Larson and Eliason did the same. Kate Schutz and Emma Reinesch rolled to a 4-and-2 win, and Londyn Hajek with Elliot Smith secured a convincing 3-and-2 victory.
The individual matches ended in a 5-5 tie, but Mitchell's depth shined through. Childs, Sabers, Larson, and Eliason all won their singles matches, while Hajek and Rorey Koch halved theirs. Childs, Sabers, Larson, and Eliason finished the day a perfect 3-0 each, while Hajek earned 2.5 points and Koch stayed unbeaten at 1-0-2.
With momentum on their side, the Kernels return home to host the annual Mitchell Invitational on Friday, May 15, at Lakeview Golf Course. Tee time is set for 10:30 a.m.—a perfect chance to see this championship squad in action.
