Title holders VfB Stuttgart have once more reached the German Cup final thanks to a 2-1 win after extra-time against Freiburg on Wednesday evening.

Tiago Tomas scored the winner in the final minutes of extra-time as the home crowd exploded in celebrations.

Freiburg had taken the lead thanks to Maximilian Eggestein in the 28th minute but Deniz Undav levelled for the hosts in the 70th.

"I'm of course very happy, it's crazy that this happened after 119 minutes. Congratulations first of all to Freiburg. But I have to compliment my team, it was a difficult game for us," Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeness told broadcasters ARD.

"I'm very happy it didn't go to the penalty shoot-out. Also for my nerves."

Stuttgart will now have the chance to defend their title against record champions Bayern Munich on May 23 in Berlin. Bayern defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 on Tuesday.

Freiburg were ahead in the 28th after the Stuttgart defence failed to properly clear a corner and the ball was recovered by Ginter. He found Eggestein, who reacted quickly to find the net from close range.

Stuttgart saw Angelo Stiller's effort saved on the line in the 60th and he also had a goal ruled out in the 64th, but the hosts were level in the 70th thanks to Undav.

Stuttgart goalkeeper Alexander Nübel made a great save to deny Freiburg a second. The hosts quickly worked the ball and made their way to the other side of the pitch, where Undav completed the counterattack with a low shot.

Undav could have scored the winner, but goalkeeper Florian Müller made a big save to block his effort in stoppage time.

Freiburg had the ball in the net inside the opening minute of extra-time, but the referee saw foul and Lucas Höler's goal was chalked off.

Stuttgart had big chances with Chris Führich hitting the woodwork in the 97th. Müller was once more brilliant, this time to deny Bilal El Khannouss from close range in the 103rd.

But he couldn't do anything as Tomas got on the end of a cross from Badredine Bouanani and flicked the ball into the far corner in the 119th.

"Extremely disappointed. We fought until the end. The way it happened is extremely bitter. It simply hurts. We had this huge chance with the 1-0," a heartbroken Müller told ARD.

Eggestein added: "The support from the fans was great, this defeat hurts. Extremely sad. There are always things you can criticize, but both teams gave their all."
