The Seattle Storm are about to see what Dominique Malonga is truly made of—and the timing couldn't be more perfect.

With veteran star Ezi Magbegor sidelined due to injury to open the season, the spotlight shifts directly to the 6-foot-6 French phenom. And while Malonga was always destined for a significant role, this absence accelerates her timeline in a big way.

From the moment the Storm tipped off their 2026 campaign on Friday night, Malonga has been expected to anchor the team's frontcourt. That's exactly what Seattle had in mind when they selected her No. 2 overall in the 2025 WNBA Draft out of France. Now, the athletic, dunking dynamo is ready to deliver.

"No pressure, but the Storm need Malonga to mature into a superstar," the Seattle Times wrote in its season preview. "It doesn't have to happen this year, but the sooner the better. At the very least, the front office and new coaching staff are hoping she improves upon a promising rookie year that included back-to-back performances of at least 20 points and 10 rebounds."

Malonga, however, isn't letting the hype get to her head.

"There is nothing crazy that is expected from me," Malonga told the Seattle Times. "They just expect me to be me. To bring what I know. To bring energy. To run the floor. To be versatile and play defense—basically just the basic thing. They don't ask me to be out of character."

She knows the Storm's system plays to her strengths. "The playing style that we have today, it's fast-paced. It's positionless, so I'll have the opportunity to be on different positions on the floor and just be efficient in any position that I will be in. The word for this season is efficiency. That's what I want to be."

From the moment she was drafted, Malonga has been the kind of player you dream on. Her combination of size, athleticism, and skill is nearly unmatched in the league. But dreams only take you so far. The 2026 season is when those aspirations start turning into reality—and with Magbegor out, there's no waiting around.
