Thirteen years after a dream T20I debut against Pakistan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is still swinging it—and swinging it better than ever. The 36-year-old pacer, now donning the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) jersey, is enjoying a remarkable second wind in a format that has become increasingly hostile to bowlers.
Back in December 2012, a young Bhuvneshwar announced himself on the international stage with a stunning 3/9 against Pakistan at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Fast forward to today, and the story is far from over. In fact, it's entering an exciting new chapter. With 21 wickets from 11 matches in the current IPL season, Bhuvneshwar leads the wicket charts—a phenomenal achievement in a competition where 200-plus totals are now the norm and bowlers face relentless pressure from ball one.
What's his secret? Constant reinvention. "My skills and the mental aspect of my game have changed a lot," Bhuvneshwar shared. "What also changed is accepting situations quickly. The way batters are coming at you now is very different from what it used to be 10 years ago. Accepting things quickly probably helped me."
That adaptability has been crucial in an IPL that barely resembles its early years. Batters attack from the first delivery, unconventional strokes have become mainstream, and even well-executed deliveries can disappear into the stands. Bhuvneshwar admits the benchmarks have shifted dramatically. "Five years ago, if you gave 40 runs, I used to think it was a bad day. Now, if you give 40 runs, I consider it good bowling! Earlier, 200 felt like a winning score. Now, when teams chase 200, it feels like it's 'just 200'."
Despite not playing international cricket since November 2022, the former India star shows no signs of slowing down. He remains one of the league's most trusted fast bowlers, excelling both in the Powerplay and at the death. His recent match-winning figures of 4/23 against Mumbai Indians, coupled with a crucial six in the final over, prove that craft, discipline, and constant evolution can still triumph in today's batter-dominated game.
For fans and aspiring cricketers, Bhuvneshwar's journey is a masterclass in longevity—a reminder that with the right mindset and relentless adaptation, you can keep swinging well into your late 30s.
