In a thrilling Class 2 District 6 championship game on Tuesday, Mount Vernon rallied to snatch a dramatic 6-5 victory from East Newton, claiming their first district title since 2023. The game showcased the kind of high-stakes drama that makes high school softball unforgettable.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the bottom of the sixth inning. With East Newton clinging to a 5-3 lead and two outs, it looked like the Patriots might escape unscathed. Mount Vernon's AJ Shipman slapped a pitch to shortstop, where Sylvia Larsen made a swift play, firing to first while on the move. The bang-bang call went Shipman's way, extending the inning and giving the Mountaineers new life.

Mary Fields followed with an opposite-field base hit, setting the stage for freshman Hailey Stewart. The top of the lineup delivered in spectacular fashion, launching a three-run home run deep to left-center field that put Mount Vernon ahead 6-5. It was Stewart's second homer of the game—she had also opened the scoring with a solo shot in the first inning.

"This is a state championship-caliber matchup, and that's exactly what we got today," Mount Vernon head coach Matt Schubert said after the game.

East Newton coach Jeff Atchison acknowledged the pivotal moment. "I should've probably walked her (Stewart). That's my fault. I about put her on to load the bases, but the girl right behind her (Lily Burk) has been smashing base hits. But I still probably should have walked her. Kudos to her. She's a really good player—one of the best catchers in the area—and she beat us."

Atchison also addressed the close call at first base on Shipman's infield single. "I thought she was out at first. I thought that was a big play. But I think the calls went both ways. There were a couple that were kind of iffy here and there. That's the way it goes."

The game started with fireworks as Stewart's solo homer and Jocelyn Liss's two-run blast gave Mount Vernon a 3-0 lead in the first inning against East Newton starter Kolby Rinehart. Rinehart settled in after that, holding the Mountaineers scoreless through the second, third, and fourth innings before being relieved by Ericka McMillen, who allowed just one hit in the fifth.

"It was just home runs—the big bombs—that killed us," Atchison said.

East Newton's offense came in bursts. Lexi Brown cut the lead to 3-1 in the third inning with an RBI double to the opposite field gap. The Patriots then erupted for four runs in the fifth inning, capitalizing on timely hitting to take a 5-3 lead. But Mount Vernon's Emmie Schubert, who took the circle in the seventh, held East Newton scoreless to seal the victory.

The win marks a triumphant return to the top for Mount Vernon, who now look ahead to the state tournament with confidence and momentum.
