The world of college football officiating is about to see a major change at the top. The NCAA announced Tuesday that Steve Shaw, the national coordinator of officials and the sport's leading rules expert, will retire on September 1st.

Shaw has been the definitive voice on the rulebook since 2017, serving as the secretary-rules editor before taking on the additional role of coordinator of officials in 2020. His departure marks the end of a significant era for the game's integrity and on-field administration.

Reflecting on his tenure, Shaw stated, “It has been an honor of a lifetime to serve and work in college football. The relationships and friendships with commissioners, coaches, players, media and most of all my fellow officials are the memories I will always cherish.”

He also expressed confidence in the sport's future, adding, “There are many issues and challenges for college football today, but on the field between the lines, we have a masterpiece of a game.” Shaw confirmed he will work through the summer to support preparations for the 2026 season before beginning his "next chapter."

Shaw's deep roots in officiating provide a rock-solid foundation for his leadership. Before his national roles, he was the coordinator of officials for the powerhouse SEC and the Sun Belt Conference. His 22-year on-field career included 15 seasons in the SEC, where he earned the trust to officiate two BCS National Championship games (2000 and 2005) and six other major BCS bowl games.

His retirement opens a crucial position dedicated to preserving the fairness and flow of the game, ensuring every snap, from a routine first down to a season-defining goal-line stand, is judged with the utmost precision. The search for his successor will be one of the most important off-field moves in college football this year.
