Golden State Warriors fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief—Steve Kerr is officially back. After weeks of speculation about his future, the 60-year-old head coach signed a two-year contract extension and met with reporters on Friday to share his decision. "I'm thrilled to be back," Kerr said, and for anyone who loves the game, that's a welcome statement.

The road to this decision wasn't straightforward. In an ESPN feature, Kerr admitted he was "95 percent" certain he would retire before the play-in tournament in April. That all changed after the Warriors' dramatic 126-121 win over the Los Angeles Clippers—a victory that extended their season and gave them a shot at the playoffs. (Though Golden State ultimately fell to the Phoenix Suns in their next game, ending that run.)

"If I were tired and burned out, I would not be doing this," Kerr explained, via ESPN's Anthony Slater. The fire is still there, and it's fueled by something deeper than just the game itself.

Kerr credited a powerful conversation with his wife for helping him see things clearly. "My wife said, 'You might coach again someday, but you'll never coach the Warriors again,'" Kerr shared. "And that was really meaningful because I love this team, I love our players, and that struck me. I couldn't imagine walking away from the Warriors."

While stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green remain cornerstones of the franchise, Kerr emphasized that neither player directly influenced his decision—though he did speak with both before making his choice. For a coach entering his 13th season at the helm, the bond with this core group is clearly special.

But Kerr isn't resting on past success. Looking ahead to next season, he's already identifying areas for improvement—and it starts with himself. "I know I have to be better. I didn't have a great coaching year," Kerr admitted. "We got a little too loose. I gotta tighten the ship up."

That self-awareness is exactly why Warriors fans should be excited. A coach who holds himself accountable, who loves his team enough to return, and who's ready to refine his approach—that's the recipe for a bounce-back season. As Kerr himself put it, this team means too much to walk away from. Now, the work begins.
