For the second straight year, the Stephen Decatur boys lacrosse team has punched its ticket to the MPSSAA Class 2A State Championship game, powering past Huntingtown with a commanding 14-7 victory in the state semifinals on Friday night.
The Seahawks wasted no time setting the tone at Glen Burnie High School, jumping out to an early lead behind a first-quarter hat trick from John Fohner. From that explosive start, Decatur steadily built on its advantage, leaving no doubt as they secured their spot in the title game for the second consecutive season.
Now, the stage is set for a thrilling rematch. Decatur will face Bayside Conference rivals Kent Island in next week's championship game—a familiar opponent with plenty of recent history. Last year, the two teams delivered a nail-biter, with Kent Island snatching a 13-12 victory on a game-winning goal with just two minutes remaining.
The rivalry has only intensified this season. Kent Island has taken both matchups so far: a 9-7 regular season win in March and a dominant 16-4 victory in the Bayside Championship Game earlier this month. For Decatur, this is more than just a shot at redemption—it's a chance to flip the script on their biggest conference foe.
The MPSSAA State Championship Games are scheduled for May 19-21, with the exact time and location yet to be announced. Fans can expect an electric atmosphere as the Seahawks look to capture their first state title in this rivalry.
While the boys' team celebrated, Stephen Decatur's girls lacrosse team saw their season come to a close in the Class 2A State Semifinals, falling 11-4 to Centennial at the same venue.
