Stefon Diggs has been through quite the week. After being found not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges, the 32-year-old wide receiver took to social media to make one thing clear: he's not done with football. And based on his 2024 season, why should he be?
Diggs hauled in 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns last year, playing a pivotal role in helping the New England Patriots reach the Super Bowl. But after the season, the Patriots released him, making him a free agent once again. And for a player with deep roots in the DMV area, the Washington Commanders immediately emerged as a logical landing spot.
Born and raised in Montgomery County, Maryland, Diggs has long been linked to a homecoming. Commanders defensive end Charles Omenihu even stoked the flames by responding to Diggs' post with a simple message: "burgundy and gold."
On Saturday, Diggs was back in the area for a Mother's Day event hosted by his "Diggs Deep Foundation." Naturally, when he spoke with reporters, the topic of Washington came up.
"Yeah, a little bit," Diggs said when asked if he'd been in touch with Commanders players. "I'm familiar with the city and I'm familiar with the people. So, we gonna see down the pipe over these next couple of months. What looks good, what makes sense. I definitely wanna shed some light on them and might go check 'em out for a little bit. It's love. It's hometown. So, it makes sense, but right now, I kinda like to take a breath. I've been training, I've been doing everything I'm supposed to."
The Commanders are in need of receiver help, and while many assume they're waiting on the 49ers to release Brandon Aiyuk—a close friend of quarterback Jayden Daniels—Diggs offers a proven veteran presence with a hometown connection. Whether Washington adds one or both, the possibility of Diggs suiting up in burgundy and gold in 2026 is certainly one to watch.
