Stefon Diggs' attorney said NFL teams had "been reluctant to sign him" as he stood trial for strangulation and assault and battery charges.

After a tense legal battle that could have derailed his career, veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs has finally gotten the closure he needed. A Massachusetts jury acquitted the former New England Patriots star of strangulation and assault and battery charges on May 5, clearing the way for what his legal team hopes will be a return to the NFL.

Diggs, 32, has been a free agent since the Patriots released him on March 11, despite posting his seventh 1,000-yard receiving season and helping New England reach Super Bowl 60. The four-time Pro Bowler's unsigned status raised eyebrows around the league, but his attorney, Mitchell Schuster, believes the legal cloud was the primary obstacle.

"I just think teams have been reluctant to sign him with these false charges hanging over his head," Schuster told reporters after the verdict. "Now that he's been exonerated and his truth has been heard, I believe that a team will reach out and sign him imminently. And they'll be lucky to get them."

The timing couldn't be better for a team in need of a proven playmaker. With Organized Team Activities (OTAs) already underway across the league, adding a receiver of Diggs' caliber could be a game-changer for a contending squad. Schuster hinted that a deal might come together quickly, responding with a simple "OTAs" when asked about Diggs' next steps.

Diggs' off-field issues have "impacted him both personally and professionally," Schuster acknowledged, but the attorney is optimistic that the legal victory will allow his client to focus on what he does best: catching passes and moving chains. For a player who has consistently produced at an elite level, the wait for a new home might finally be over.
