The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a pivotal moment at quarterback, and a bold new trade proposal could reshape their future under center. While all signs point to Aaron Rodgers returning for the 2026-27 season—his 22nd in the league—the 42-year-old's long-term presence is far from guaranteed. That has the Steelers' front office weighing options beyond their current roster.
Currently, Pittsburgh's depth chart features young signal-callers Will Howard (24) and Drew Allar (22). But according to a recent trade concept from Fansided's Wynston Wilcox, the Steelers might be better off targeting a proven young talent from an unexpected source: their AFC North rival, the Cleveland Browns.
Wilcox proposes that Pittsburgh acquire 24-year-old quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who is currently battling Deshaun Watson for Cleveland's starting job. "Sanders could very well provide them with a shot at long-term stability," Wilcox wrote. "Assuming Rodgers comes back this year, Sanders learning behind him could be the best thing for him."
The logic is compelling. Sanders, a former Colorado standout and Pro Bowl talent, is still on his rookie deal with three years remaining—including 2026. That contract structure would give Pittsburgh financial flexibility while they develop a potential franchise QB. "While they're expecting Rodgers to be back in 2026, that doesn't mean he'll come back for a 23rd season," Wilcox added. "Pittsburgh has to start putting themselves first at the most important position."
Of course, pulling off such a deal is easier said than done. Sanders is locked in a tight competition with Watson for Cleveland's starting role, and even if he loses that battle, the Browns would likely want to keep him as a high-upside backup. Trading a $4 million asset to a division rival is also a tough sell—rivalry trades are rare in the NFL, especially involving quarterbacks with this kind of potential.
Still, for a Steelers team that hasn't had long-term stability under center since Ben Roethlisberger's prime, the idea of grooming a young quarterback behind a future Hall of Famer like Rodgers is tantalizing. Whether Pittsburgh actually pulls the trigger remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the quarterback conversation in Steel City is far from over.
