This week's nominees were from Dallas, Stayton and McNary softball and Silverton, Amity and Central track and field.

Stayton’s Maylie Brown is soaring high this week, earning the Maps Credit Union girls Athlete of the Week title after a standout performance on the softball diamond. The sophomore slugger delivered a perfect stat line—three hits, three runs, and three RBIs—in the Eagles’ dominant 15-0 win over North Marion on April 23.

Brown captured 36.05% of the reader poll votes, edging out a competitive field that included McNary’s Violet Siegel, who finished second with 23.27%. The weekly honor, voted on by Statesman Journal readers, highlights the rising talent across Oregon high school sports.

But Brown wasn’t the only athlete turning heads. The ballot featured a deep roster of nominees from Dallas, Stayton, and McNary softball, as well as track and field standouts from Silverton, Amity, and Central. Among them, Silverton’s Haugen made waves at the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays in Portland, clearing 5 feet, 9 1/4 inches in the high jump—a mark that ranks fourth on the 5A all-time list and is tied for 12th in state history. It’s also the best jump in Oregon this season by more than two inches. Just three days earlier, the freshman broke the 5A all-time freshman class record with a 5-7 clearance.

In the field events, Hughes of Amity threw a 3A season-best 130-4 in the discus at the North Marion Invitational, adding a 35-8 shot put that earned her second place and ranks fifth in 3A. Meanwhile, Central’s Taufa’ausa tossed a 36-1 shot put at the John Oliver Invitational, good for second and third on the 5A season list. On the diamond, McNary’s Siegel (a freshman) and another Siegel (a senior) each posted four hits, four runs, and two RBIs in the Celtics’ 10-0 win over Sprague.

From record-breaking jumps to clutch hits, this week’s athletes prove that Oregon’s high school sports scene is alive with energy and excellence.
