The Truist Championship honored the Charlotte-native Tuesday with a commemorative statue in Elizabeth Park.

In a powerful tribute to a trailblazing figure in sports history, the Truist Championship unveiled a commemorative statue in Charlotte's Elizabeth Park on Tuesday, honoring Dr. Charlie Sifford Sr., the first Black member of the PGA Tour. The statue, part of the Charlotte Trail of History initiative, stands as a beacon of inspiration for future generations.

Dr. Sifford, a Charlotte native who broke golf's color barrier in the 1960s, passed away in February 2015 at the age of 92. His journey was marked by resilience in the face of adversity—he often faced discrimination on and off the course, but his determination paved the way for diversity in professional golf. The statue captures not just his legacy as a player, but his role as a pioneer who opened doors for countless others.

At the ceremony, Charles Sifford Jr., the golfer's son, shared heartfelt words about his father's mission. "If you work hard and have a dream, you can succeed," he said. "He wanted to make it easier for young kids coming up behind him. Someone to actually teach them how to play the game, the proper way, rather than the way he had to learn. Hit it, run, hit, and just keep on going without any proper training."

This unveiling marks the first installment of the "Truist Championship Tuesdays" series, a year-long initiative that will spotlight individuals and organizations making a significant impact in Charlotte. Each first Tuesday of the month, the championship will honor those who, like Dr. Sifford, have shaped the community through their contributions. For golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, this statue is a reminder that the sport's greatest moments often happen off the fairway, in the hearts of those who dare to break barriers.
