In a thrilling display of consistency and composure, St. Joseph High School has once again proven why it's the gold standard of New Jersey high school boys golf. The Green Knights successfully defended their Tournament of Champions title on May 11 at Raritan Valley Country Club in Bridgewater, edging out South Jersey powerhouse Mainland by just two strokes—a nail-biting finish compared to last year's dominant 15-stroke victory.
Leading the charge was star sophomore Rory Asselta, who also repeated as individual champion in dramatic fashion. After finishing regulation tied with Cherry Hill East junior Tyler Whitney at 3-under-par 69, Asselta sealed the win with a birdie on the first playoff hole. "It was closer than last year, but the team got it done, and same thing with me," said Asselta, who set a tournament record last season with an 8-under 64.
The Green Knights posted a shoot-four, count-four score of 299, with Delbarton finishing as runner-up at 306. Asselta's round featured five birdies and two bogeys, while his brother, senior Michael Asselta, carded a 70 to finish fourth overall. Junior Carl Antifonario added a 78, and sophomore Justin Peck contributed an 82.
"Sometimes people only get a chance to do this once, and we were lucky enough to do it twice," Michael Asselta said. "So we didn't let that moment slip away."
With only Michael Asselta graduating, the future looks bright for St. Joseph. Coach Kevin Rooney, whose team also captured North Non-Public sectional and Bergen County titles this season, is already looking ahead. "Three of these guys will be back, and hopefully we'll continue to perform well," he said.
For golf fans and aspiring young players, this back-to-back championship run is a masterclass in teamwork, pressure management, and the value of consistent practice—qualities that translate directly to the course, whether you're competing for a state title or just enjoying a weekend round with friends.
