In a gritty Super League showdown, St Helens managed to keep pace with league leaders Leeds, securing a hard-fought 32-16 victory over York—though the final scoreline hardly tells the full story of this fiercely contested battle.

The Saints came flying out of the gates, setting the tone early with a try from Bill Leyland that got the home crowd roaring. Within the first 19 minutes, Owen Dagnall added two more scores, pushing St Helens to a commanding 16-0 lead. It looked like a rout was on the cards.

But York had other plans. Showing remarkable resilience, the visitors stormed back into contention as Jesse Dee crossed the line twice in just six minutes, cutting the deficit to 16-10 by halftime. The momentum had shifted, and the second half became a tense, grinding affair.

For much of the third quarter, the game hung in the balance. Both defenses stood firm, and York dared to dream of an upset. Then came the moment that broke the deadlock: powerhouse forward Alex Walmsley powered through for a crucial try, swinging the momentum firmly back to St Helens.

From there, the Saints found their stride. Jack Welsby, Jake Davies, and Nene MacDonald each added tries in a late surge that put the game beyond doubt. York, to their credit, never stopped fighting and earned a well-deserved consolation try from Scott Galeano in the final minutes.

For St Helens, this victory was about more than just two points—it was a statement of character. After a blistering start, they had to dig deep when York threatened to steal the show. In the end, their experience and composure under pressure proved decisive, keeping them firmly in the hunt at the top of the Super League table.
