When the lights are brightest, Jacob Spurlock has a habit of stealing the show. The Boyd County senior proved that once more during a spectacular All-Star weekend, cementing his status as one of Kentucky's premier shooters.
At the 33rd annual Kentucky-Ohio "Battle at the Border" showcase at Thomas More University, Spurlock didn't just participate—he dominated. He kicked off the festivities by capturing the 3-point contest crown, then capped the weekend by dropping 20 points and earning MVP honors to lead Team Kentucky to a decisive 114-91 victory on April 11.
For Spurlock, the region's all-time leading scorer with a staggering 628 career three-pointers, the event was a perfect blend of competition and camaraderie. "When you get out there with the top players, it's really fun," he said. "You know everybody can play. It's just a pure way to enjoy basketball—no titles or records to worry about, just going out and competing with guys you respect."
His performance was a masterclass in efficiency and clutch shooting. Connecting on 8 of 13 shots from the field, including four from deep, Spurlock was the offensive catalyst as Kentucky built an early double-digit lead and never looked back. The sharp-shooting display was a continuation of the focus he showed a day earlier. "I was for sure trying to win that 3-point contest," Spurlock admitted. "After that, winning the MVP against all the top guys let me showcase my skills on a big stage."
The electric atmosphere added to the moment. "The gym was packed, people were standing at the top, and it got really loud," Spurlock recalled. That energy was felt on the sidelines, too, where Boyd County coach Randy Anderson watched with pride. "It was a great experience," Anderson said. "Whenever the team needed a bucket, he was money. It was like a proud dad moment for me. Jacob always plays with a smile."
For a player with such a prolific scoring resume, this All-Star summer served as a fitting finale to a stellar high school career and a thrilling preview of the next-level competition to come.
