In one of the most stunning upsets in Calder Cup Playoff history, the Springfield Thunderbirds have ended the Providence Bruins' remarkable 2025-2026 season with a 1-0 overtime victory on Thursday, May 7. The win clinched the best-of-five series 3-1, sending Springfield to the Atlantic Division Finals and leaving the Bruins—who finished a staggering 38 points ahead of the T-Birds in the regular season—wondering what could have been.

Providence entered the playoffs as the AHL's top seed, having earned the MacGregor Kilpatrick Trophy as regular-season champions. But the Thunderbirds, an affiliate of the St. Louis Blues, proved that playoff hockey is a whole new game. This marked the second straight overtime win for Springfield in the series, following a 3-2 thriller on Tuesday that shifted all the momentum.

The game was a goaltender's duel for the ages. Springfield's Georgi Romanov was named first star after turning away all 37 shots he faced, delivering a performance that will be remembered for years. His counterpart, Providence's Michael DiPietro—the 2025-2026 AHL MVP—was nearly as sharp, stopping 27 of 28 shots and earning third-star honors. But in overtime, it was Romanov who got the last laugh.

The only goal of the night came at 4:01 of the extra period. Dillon Dube crashed the net from the left side, beating DiPietro for his second goal of the series. Otto Stenberg and Chris Wagner picked up the assists, sending the Springfield bench into a frenzy.

Romanov's brilliance was on full display early, particularly in the first period when he made a jaw-dropping post-to-post save to deny Riley Tufte on a 3-on-1 Bruins rush. Providence also pressed hard late in the second period with a power play, but Springfield's penalty kill—which finished the series a stellar 13-for-15—held firm once again.

For the Bruins, it's a bitter end to what was an otherwise dominant season. For the Thunderbirds, the Cinderella story continues. They'll now face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the Atlantic Division Finals, beginning Tuesday, May 12, at Mohegan Arena. If this series is any indication, hockey fans won't want to miss a minute.
