Sporting Jax men's soccer team has finally broken through, earning its first competitive victory with a commanding 2-0 win over Florida rival Sarasota Paradise in the USL Cup tournament. The match, held at Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, marked a significant milestone for the fledgling club as they continue to build momentum in their inaugural season.
The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Rafferty Pedder delivered a moment of individual brilliance. After receiving a pass from Kieran Sadlier, Pedder embarked on a mesmerizing 20-yard dribble through the Sarasota defense before unleashing a precise low drive from the edge of the penalty area. The goal sent a surge of energy through the Sporting Jax bench and set the tone for the remainder of the match.
Ahmad Al Qaq sealed the victory in the closing stages, finishing off a well-worked move that began with a cross from Edgardo Rito. The two-goal cushion allowed Sporting Jax to play with confidence and control the tempo as the clock wound down.
Defensively, the team showed tremendous grit, with goalkeeper Christian Olivares making three crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet. Notably, former Bartram Trail High School standout Ethan Dudley earned his first start, anchoring a central defensive trio alongside Ryan Edwards and Antonio Gomez. The young defender's composure and positioning were key to neutralizing Sarasota's attacking threats.
While this victory is a welcome boost, Sporting Jax are still searching for their first win against teams at their own level in the USL Championship. The USL Cup provides a unique opportunity for second-tier clubs like Sporting Jax to test themselves against third-tier opposition like Sarasota Paradise, offering valuable match experience and a chance to build winning habits.
Looking ahead, the team hits the road for their next USL Cup challenge against FC Naples on Sunday, May 17, at 5 p.m. With their first win under their belts and a growing sense of belief, Sporting Jax will be eager to build on this result and continue their upward trajectory.
