The Michigan State Spartans have officially closed the book on spring football, opening their final practice to the public in a showcase event at Spartan Stadium. For fans, it was a welcome glimpse into the team's progress after a long offseason, offering a first look at the 2025 squad in a live setting.

While the practice was a controlled, non-tackling scrimmage designed to keep players healthy, several key storylines emerged. All eyes were on the quarterback competition, where Aidan Chiles has departed for the NFL. Nico Alessio took the majority of the first-team reps and showed promising flashes, demonstrating improved pocket presence and a willingness to check the ball down. His chemistry with standout wide receiver Jaelen McCray, who solidified his role as the clear WR1, was a notable bright spot.

However, the day also highlighted areas needing refinement. Alessio's session was a microcosm of spring itself—a mix of growth and growing pains. He followed a beautiful, poised touchdown pass with an interception read perfectly by the defense. This inconsistency is expected in April, but it underscores the development needed before fall. Backup Kayd Coffman also saw limited action, going 4-7 for 45 yards and adding 16 yards on the ground.

Special teams raised some immediate concerns. The punting game lacked the consistency provided by former Spartan Ryan Eckley, and the field goal unit struggled. Kickers Jack Boyd and Enis Ahmetbasic combined to go just 2-6 on the day, with both makes coming from Boyd from 35 and 44 yards.

With the spring chapter complete, the focus now shifts to summer conditioning and fall camp. The showcase provided a foundational look at a team building new chemistry, particularly on offense.
