The Missouri Southern Lions showed serious resilience on Friday, staging a thrilling comeback to defeat the Missouri Western Griffons 6-3 at Warren Turner Field. The victory was especially sweet as it snapped the Griffons' formidable seven-game winning streak.
After Blake Jones drove in Aiden Hinkle for a first-inning lead, the Lions found themselves in a hole. Missouri Western answered immediately in the top of the second, launching two home runs to surge ahead 3-1.
Undeterred, the Lions' offense came alive in a decisive fourth inning. Jones struck again, bringing home Jacob Filip, before Jaso Lazo delivered the biggest swing of the day—a two-run homer that scored Jones and reclaimed the lead for Southern at 4-3.
Southern's power display continued late in the game to seal the victory. Andrew Young added insurance with a solo shot in the seventh, and Will Doherty followed with another solo homer in the eighth, pushing the final score to 6-3.
On the mound, Owen Schneider was a workhorse for the Lions, earning the win with a strong eight-inning performance, allowing three runs while striking out five. Blake Jones led the charge at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Jake Leeker also added a pair of hits.
For the Griffons, Isaac Huettl was a bright spot, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the losing effort.
The series promises more excitement, with the two teams set to face off again Saturday and Sunday at Warren Turner Field.
