The English Football League (EFL) has launched an investigation into an alleged spying incident involving Southampton, just days before their crucial Championship play-off semi-final against Middlesbrough. According to BBC Sport, a Southampton performance analyst was reportedly caught filming Middlesbrough's training session and taking pictures of tactical setups late Thursday morning. The staff member was confronted, instructed to delete the footage, and asked to leave the premises. However, Middlesbrough officials were reportedly furious and quickly contacted the EFL to report the incident.
In a statement released Thursday evening, the EFL confirmed: "The EFL has written to Southampton FC requesting their observations following a complaint from Middlesbrough FC relating to alleged unauthorised filming ahead of the two clubs meeting in Saturday's Championship play-off semi-final first leg. The alleged incident is said to have taken place on Middlesbrough's private property by an individual identified to be associated with Southampton. The League is treating this matter as potential misconduct under EFL regulations and will be making no further comment at this time."
The EFL's rules are clear: "No club shall directly or indirectly observe (or attempt to observe) another club's training session in the period of 72 hours prior to any match." This regulation was introduced seven years ago after Leeds United were fined £200,000 by the EFL for watching opponents train before matches. That case involved a Leeds staff member acting suspiciously outside Derby County's training ground ahead of a fixture on January 10, 2019. Then-Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa admitted he had sent staff to watch training sessions of every team Leeds faced that season, leading to the EFL finding that Leeds breached rules regarding treating teams with "good faith."
