Southampton Football Club has requested additional time to complete an internal investigation into allegations that the club spied on opponents Middlesbrough, according to CEO Phil Parsons.
The controversy erupted after the EFL charged Southampton following a complaint from Middlesbrough about "alleged unauthorised filming on private property." The incident reportedly took place ahead of the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final, which ended in a goalless draw at the Riverside Stadium.
With the second leg now upon us, Parsons has urged patience, emphasizing that the full picture must emerge before any judgments are made. "The club is fully cooperating with the EFL and the Disciplinary Commission, whilst also undertaking an internal review to ensure that all facts and context are properly understood," he said.
Parsons acknowledged the intense scrutiny the club has faced but stressed the importance of a thorough process. "Given the intensity of the fixture schedule and the short turnaround between matches, we have requested time to complete that process thoroughly and responsibly," he explained. "We understand the discussion and speculation that has followed over recent days, but we also believe it is important that the full context is established before conclusions are drawn."
The CEO also took a moment to defend the character of those within the club, praising the unity that has defined their season. "Having spent a significant amount of time around this football club, I know the character of the people within it. The togetherness shown by players, staff and supporters throughout this season has been a huge part of the progress we have made, and I am confident that spirit will remain unchanged."
As the Saints prepare for a crucial second leg, Parsons highlighted the club's commitment to long-term success and financial responsibility, thanking owner Dragan Solak for his continued support. "This season has represented another important step forward for the football club. While we know there is still more work ahead of us and we are not yet where we ultimately want to be, the unity shown during challenging moments has continued to define Southampton Football Club."
