It's back to the drawing board for South Marion football after its initial coaching hire fell through. Here's what we know.

The South Marion High School football program finds itself in an unexpected huddle just one day after naming its inaugural head coach. What was meant to be a landmark announcement has turned into a sudden reset, leaving the new Ocala school to restart its search with spring practices looming.

Kevin Saunders, who was officially introduced as the head coach on Wednesday, has withdrawn from the position due to personal reasons. Athletic Director Colby Wisdom confirmed the reversal, stating that unforeseen personal matters led Saunders to step away. "Our thoughts are with Coach Saunders as he navigates this tough time," Wisdom said, also announcing the postponement of a key introductory meeting originally set for April 22.

In a conversation reflecting the difficult nature of the decision, Saunders cited a desire to be closer to family. "I have done a lot of thinking and praying about it," he shared. "I feel terrible... but I want to get back home closer to family. It's time in my life to get closer to home." He expressed regret, praising the South Marion administration and their kid-first approach, which had initially attracted him to the historic role.

For any new program, securing the right leader is the critical first play. The head coach sets the culture, the scheme, and the standard—from the playbook to the practice gear. South Marion's search now resumes with urgency, as building a team from the ground up is a monumental task that requires a coach who is fully committed and ready to lay the foundation for future success.

The clock is ticking toward spring football, a vital installation period for any team, especially one yet to take its first snap. The search for the right person to lead the South Marion Spartans onto the field for the first time is officially back on.
