The South Carolina Gamecocks softball team (30-27) saw their SEC Tournament run cut short Tuesday night, falling 2-0 to Ole Miss (33-23) in the opening round in Lexington, Kentucky. It was a pitchers' duel from the start, but the Rebels managed to scratch across just enough runs to advance.
Ole Miss struck first with a solo home run in the top of the first inning with two outs, setting the tone early. They added an insurance run in the fifth inning on a single and a double, building a lead that would prove insurmountable for the Gamecocks.
South Carolina's offense struggled to find its rhythm, managing just four hits scattered across four different players. The Gamecocks had their best chances in the first and sixth innings, putting runners in scoring position both times, but couldn't deliver the clutch hit with two outs.
In the circle, Jori Heard (11-11) took the loss despite a solid outing. She allowed two runs on six hits and struck out two over six innings of work. Emma Friedel came on in relief for the final inning and retired all three batters she faced, keeping the Gamecocks within reach.
One bright spot for South Carolina came from Arianna Rodi, who drew a walk in the second inning. That free pass gave her 46 walks on the season, moving her into second place all-time in program history for a single season. It also pushed her into sole possession of sixth place on the career walks list with 95—a testament to her patience at the plate.
Now, the Gamecocks will play the waiting game. They'll learn their postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday at 7 p.m., with watch party details to be announced later. For a team that battled through a tough SEC schedule, the hope is that their resume is strong enough to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament.
