South Carolina has been checking all the right boxes for Brayden Tyson, and on Saturday, the four-star running back decided to put on the Gamecocks uniform.
From Snellville, Georgia, Tyson made it official, committing to Shane Beamer and the South Carolina program over Florida State, Purdue, and Rutgers. It was a decision that had been building for a while—six trips to Columbia, including an official visit earlier this month, and each time, the feeling only grew stronger.
"It feels like home. I feel like I could go there even if I wasn't playing football," Tyson told Rivals.
That kind of connection doesn't happen overnight. South Carolina was one of the first programs to believe in Tyson, offering him a scholarship before he even started high school. And they never wavered.
"They believed in me early," he said. "That meant a lot in the beginning, then they just stayed with me the whole process. Over time, I built strong relationships with the coaches, I learned more about the program, and when I visited there, it just always felt right."
That early foundation made the official visit feel less like a final test and more like a celebration. "The official visit was the icing on top," Tyson said. "After I went to other schools, it just didn't feel the same. I really knew it was South Carolina on a visit earlier this spring when I was there for an unofficial visit, but I kept taking visits to make sure. On the official visit, that was it—I knew 100%."
Running backs coach Stan Drayton played a major role in sealing the deal. For a player like Tyson, who prides himself on being a complete back, finding a coach who shares his values and has a proven track record of development was key.
"He's a very God-centered person, and he's developed backs like me," Tyson said. "That shows me he knows how to develop me the right way." Drayton's personal touch—visiting Tyson's school, meeting his family—made all the difference. "He did a great job… he came to my school, met my family, and the relationship just kept growing. He is a great coach, and since he got to South Carolina, he has recruited me hard. I know he wants me there."
Head coach Shane Beamer also left a lasting impression. Known as a "player's coach," Beamer's approach goes beyond the game. "He cares about you more than just football," Tyson said. "He makes it feel like a family. Coach Beamer has a great personality, he is fun to be around and I know he will do what is best for me."
That culture—family-first, consistent, and close-knit—ultimately separated South Carolina from the rest of the pack. And for fans looking to rep the next big thing in Gamecocks football, this is a commitment worth celebrating. Get ready to see No. 22 in garnet and black.
