After seven long years, the drought is officially over. South Brunswick girls soccer not only secured its first playoff victory since 2019 on May 14—they did it in emphatic style. The No. 7-seeded Cougars stormed past No. 23 Havelock with a commanding 5-2 win in the second round of the NCHSAA 5A state playoffs, and the star of the show was junior sensation Meryn Deutsch.

Deutsch delivered a jaw-dropping five-goal performance, pushing her season total to an incredible 58 goals. It was a moment years in the making for a program that just three seasons ago finished 6-12. Now, at 16-3-1 and crowned conference champions, the Cougars are just two wins away from the state semifinals.

"This was my goal from the beginning of the season," Deutsch said. "It's something I'm proud I've accomplished. It's a great feeling."

But Deutsch's impact goes far beyond the soccer pitch. A multi-sport standout, she averaged nearly 20 points per game during basketball season and has become the latest face of a rising tide in South Brunswick girls athletics. She follows in the footsteps of stars like softball standout Kina Davis (now at North Carolina) and lacrosse talent Morgan Hill (Lander), who have helped transform expectations around the school's girls programs.

"It's a feeling that I can't even describe," Deutsch added. "I wouldn't change it for the world."

Even second-year head coach Logan Adkisson admits he's still in awe watching Deutsch take over matches. "There's no denying that Meryn could play for just about any team in the state," he said.

The Cougars' resurgence has also been fueled by a shift in competition. In their first year outside the former Mideastern Conference, South Brunswick went a perfect 8-0 in the newly formed split 3A/4A/5A Southeastern Conference—a sign that this program is built to last. With Deutsch leading the charge, the Cougars are proving that their playoff return is just the beginning.
