In a performance that sent shockwaves through the golfing world, 22-year-old South African Yurav Premlall didn't just win his first DP World Tour title on Sunday—he absolutely dominated. Competing in just his 29th career event on the tour, Premlall captured the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship by a staggering 14 shots, coming within a single stroke of matching Tiger Woods' legendary 15-shot victory at the 2000 U.S. Open.
After sitting six shots back following the opening round, Premlall caught fire at Real Club de Golf El Prat in Barcelona, Spain. He carded rounds of 64-63-63 to finish at an incredible 28 under par, leaving the rest of the field in his wake. "No words," Premlall said after the win. "I've worked so hard to get into this position and it's so rewarding to finally see the results. The last eight, nine months have been such a struggle just to build myself onto a platform where I could give myself a chance to win. To end up here is a dream come true."
The young star's path to this moment has been anything but straightforward. Making his ninth DP World Tour start of the season, Premlall was playing off Category 18 membership—a status he earned by finishing as one of the two leading available players from the Sunshine Tour's Order of Merit at the final stage of DP World Tour Q-School last November. His previous victories include the 2024 Vodacom Origins of Golf on the Sunshine Tour and a Big Easy Tour event back in 2019, when Premlall was just a 15-year-old amateur. Months before that, he had become the youngest-ever qualifier for the South African Open, and in 2021, he took low amateur honors at that same event while also winning the Nedbank Junior Challenge.
Entering this week ranked No. 598 in the world—with a career-high of just No. 462—Premlall had been grinding across multiple tours to stay sharp. When he couldn't get into a DP World Tour event, he'd log starts on the HotelPlanner and Sunshine tours, bringing his worldwide starts this year alone to 13. On Sunday, all that hard work paid off in spectacular fashion.
Premlall held a five-shot lead over Stefano Mazzoli heading into the final round, but any thoughts of a close finish were quickly erased. While Mazzoli stumbled to a 4-over 76, Premlall birdied six of his first nine holes, turning the final round into a victory lap. For a young golfer who has been grinding his way up the ranks, this isn't just a win—it's a statement that a new star has arrived on the global stage.
