In a move that's sending ripples through the college basketball world, longtime Christopher Newport University head coach John Krikorian is packing his bags for the Division I ranks. Sources, including a current CNU player, have confirmed to the Sportswrap that Krikorian is set to join Elon University as an assistant coach, ending a remarkable 15-season tenure with the Captains.

Krikorian took the reins from the late CJ Woollum back in 2010, and what a ride it's been. Under his leadership, CNU transformed into a Division III powerhouse, racking up 362 wins and making 12 NCAA tournament appearances. The Captains reached four Final Fours and, in a crowning achievement, captured the 2023 national championship. This past season, Krikorian's squad came tantalizingly close to another title shot, falling to Emory in the national semifinals.

Now, CNU Athletic Director Kyle McMullin faces the daunting task of replacing one of the most successful coaches in Division III history. It's a tough act to follow, but the Captains' program is built on a strong foundation.

For Krikorian, the move to Elon represents a new challenge in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA). The Phoenix have yet to make an NCAA tournament appearance, so Krikorian's championship pedigree and proven ability to build a winner could be just what the program needs to turn the corner. It's a fresh start for a coach who has already left an indelible mark on the game.
