The Oklahoma Sooners have been on a recruiting tear for the 2027 class, landing nearly every top target they've set their sights on. But as any championship-caliber program knows, you can't win them all.
On Thursday, the Sooners came up just short in the battle for four-star defensive tackle George Toia, who announced his commitment to UCLA. At 6'2" and 300 pounds, Toia is projected as a nose tackle—a position that's becoming increasingly vital in today's game. He's ranked as the No. 8 defensive lineman in the 2027 class by Rivals Industry, and his size and skill set would have made him an ideal replacement for Jayden Jackson, who's expected to make the leap to the NFL soon.
Toia's decision stings a bit more given how close things seemed. Back in December, when asked about his favorites, he told Rivals, "They are all up there for me!" mentioning Oklahoma alongside Texas Tech, USC, and Oregon. He added, "The visit to Oklahoma went great. The defense there and the coaches over there have me excited about Norman. It's a great place to play." The Sooners ultimately finished as runners-up in his recruitment.
Still, Oklahoma's defensive line cupboard is far from bare. The Sooners already have commitments from three impressive defensive tackle prospects in Deven Robertson, Elija Harmon, and Sione Felila—who chose OU just days ago. It's possible Felila's commitment shifted the math for Toia, leading him to look elsewhere for his collegiate home.
While missing out on a player of Toia's caliber is never easy, the Sooners have built a program that consistently reloads along the defensive front. With a 2027 class already loaded with talent, Oklahoma fans can rest assured that the pipeline to elite defensive linemen remains wide open.
