Sonny Gray made a triumphant return to the mound on Wednesday, and the Boston Red Sox couldn't have asked for a better outcome. After spending over two weeks on the injured list with a hamstring strain, the veteran right-hander was activated just in time to remind everyone why he's such a valuable piece of the rotation.
Gray was nothing short of dominant in his first start back, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and two walks. He struck out two batters along the way, but more importantly, he looked completely in control from the first pitch. "I feel more comfortable out there on the mound and in a big league game than I do in a lot of places, and that's just the truth," Gray said after the game, reflecting on his seamless return to action.
His performance was exactly what the Red Sox needed to complete a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 4-0 victory. Interim manager Chad Tracy was all smiles when discussing the team's recent surge. "It's been a good (three days). The series was good. We did a lot of things right. We played great defensively. We ran the bases extremely well. We got the clutch hits that have been missing. We pitched extremely well. So it was a really good short trip."
With the win, Boston improved to 16-21 on the season, showing signs of life after a slow start. The Red Sox now return to Fenway Park for a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays starting Thursday. For a team looking to climb back into contention, having a healthy and confident Sonny Gray back in the rotation could be the spark they need.
