Somehow, Paul Skenes is Getting Even Better

Paul Skenes is doing something that shouldn't be possible in Major League Baseball—he's getting even better.

The Pittsburgh Pirates' young ace finished each of his first two big-league seasons with a sub-2.00 ERA, a feat that already had baseball fans buzzing. But after a rough Opening Day start against the Mets in New York, where he allowed five runs in just two-thirds of an inning, the idea of going three-for-three seemed like a long shot.

Fast forward to mid-May, and after just eight starts since that rocky debut, Skenes has quietly returned to the elite form that made him one of the most exciting arms in the game. His ERA now sits at a sparkling 1.98.

The latest masterpiece came Tuesday night at PNC Park, where Skenes tossed eight shutout innings against the Colorado Rockies in a 3-1 victory. He carried a perfect game into the fifth inning and a no-hitter into the seventh, ultimately allowing just two baserunners—a hit batter and a single—over the entire night.

"I think I made pitches good enough to get outs throughout the night," Skenes said after the game. "I think some of my pitches weren't as sharp as they normally have been, but I got them to good spots."

The right-hander recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts, marking the fourth double-digit strikeout game of his career. He worked efficiently through 98 pitches, even battling through a velocity dip in the eighth inning after a long bottom of the seventh.

"My first pitch was 93 mph and I was like, 'Probably shouldn't have come back out,'" Skenes joked. "I told that to manager Don Kelly after, but it was a long inning before and sometimes it takes a bit to get going, especially late in the game. Glad we got through the eighth."

In seven of his eight starts since Opening Day, Skenes has allowed one or zero runs. For a pitcher who already wears the crown as one of baseball's most dominant young arms, this kind of consistency is nothing short of remarkable. And for Pirates fans—and anyone who loves watching greatness—the show is just getting started.
