Northwestern softball is heading into the Big Ten Tournament with serious momentum, closing out the regular season by taking two of three from Minnesota at The Ballpark at Rosemont. The series win marks the Wildcats' fourth straight—and they did it with flair, earning the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament.
Friday’s 5-1 victory was a statement, powered by a balanced attack where seven different Wildcats recorded hits. Grace Nieto set the tone early, getting hit by a pitch and then scoring on a two-out RBI infield single from Kansas Robinson. Both Nieto and Robinson finished with two hits and combined for three of the team's five runs. Minnesota’s lone run came in the third on an RBI single from Jessa Snippes, but first-year ace Marina Mason locked in from there, scattering just three hits over seven innings for her fifth complete game in ten starts. She got a little help from left fielder Izzy Cunnea, whose diving grab in the sixth with runners on first and second saved a run and kept the Gophers at bay.
Saturday’s 3-2 loss snapped an 11-game win streak and marked Northwestern’s first Big Ten defeat since April 5 against Michigan. But the Wildcats didn’t let it linger. They bounced back Sunday with a dominant performance, and once again, it was Mason leading the way. The freshman pitched a one-hit shutout with a career-high 12 strikeouts, delivering her second complete game of the series and proving she’s built for big moments.
At the plate, Emma Raye continued her hot stretch, going 4-for-9 with three RBIs and climbing to seventh on Northwestern’s all-time RBI list. Kaylie Avvisato also stayed locked in, recording a hit in each game to extend her hitting streak to seven and her reached-base streak to a career-high 27 games. With this kind of pitching depth, timely hitting, and defensive gems, the Wildcats are looking like a dangerous No. 6 seed ready to make some noise in the Big Ten Tournament.
