A new era is dawning for Montevideo Thunder Hawks softball, and it's being led by a coach with a proven track record of building competitive programs. Mike Trewick, who began his first year as the school's athletic director this past fall, is now bringing his fresh perspective to the diamond as the team's new head coach this spring.

Trewick's journey to Montevideo is built on a diverse and successful coaching resume that speaks to his adaptability and leadership. After graduating from St. John's University in 1993, he cut his teeth as a head coach in men's basketball at St. Mary's University before returning to his alma mater as a multi-sport assistant. His impact was deeply felt in St. Cloud, where he guided the Tech boys basketball team to a Class AAAA state runner-up finish in 2010 while also leading softball programs at Tech and Apollo.

Now, he faces an exciting new challenge: revitalizing the Thunder Hawks' softball program. The team is looking to build momentum after a challenging previous season, and Trewick's experience in developing athletes across multiple sports will be a key asset. He inherits a roster ready to compete, led by senior standout Kylieann Johnson, an All-Area Honorable Mention outfielder/second baseman.

Johnson will be crucial, but she's not alone. The Thunder Hawks boast a strong core of returning seniors, including versatile players like Gabby Augeson, Emmary Birhanzl, and Brooklyn Pederson. With a mix of experienced juniors and promising sophomores also in the fold, the foundation for a turnaround is there. As Trewick and his staff, including assistant Kyle Goslee, implement their system, the focus will be on translating that potential into performance and forging a new identity for Montevideo softball.
