Sofia Sewing has etched her name into pickleball history once again, capturing the elusive Triple Crown at the Association of Pickleball Players (APP) Sacramento Open. This remarkable achievement—winning all three disciplines in a single event—has now been accomplished only 15 times on the APP tour, making Sewing's performance even more special.
The action unfolded at Johnson Ranch in Sacramento, California, where the APP hosted its second domestic event of the season. The tournament also introduced an exciting new format: a 24-player invitational one-day event featuring the top men and women on tour. This star-studded competition raised nearly $40,000 for Shriners Children's, adding a meaningful charitable component to the high-stakes pickleball.
In this invitational, the top 12 men and women were paired into six doubles teams, competing in a round-robin format before a quick knockout to determine the champions. On the men's side, Jack Munro and his regular partner Richard Livornese defeated Max Manthou and Aidan Schenk in the final. For the women, the top duo of Sofia Sewing and Megan Fudge outlasted Jill Braverman and Emelia Schmidt to claim the title.
The Men's Singles draw was stacked, with the entire top 10 present in Sacramento. The tournament featured plenty of drama, including an upset in the quarterfinals when No. 5 seed Patrick Kawka took down No. 4 seed DeHeart. Kawka then continued his run by defeating top seed Camron in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 seed Ammar Wazir—who had missed a significant portion of the 2025 season after climbing to the top spot—powered through Beasley and Boyer to reach the gold medal match. In the final, Wazir won two close games (scores of 9 and 7) to claim his first gold medal since October 2025, marking a triumphant return to the top of the APP singles scene.
Gold: Ammar Wazir. Silver: Patrick Kawka. Bronze: Dustin Boyer.
The Women's Singles draw was equally thrilling, with plenty of upsets shaking up the bracket. Australian Roos van Reek made an early statement by upsetting both Pretorius and Huynh before falling to top seed Sofia Sewing in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, No. 14 seed Emilia Schmidt—who recently won a triple crown at the most recent APP event—continued to show her formidable skills on the court.
For pickleball enthusiasts looking to stay ahead of the game, the Sacramento Open was a showcase of elite talent, new competition formats, and inspiring performances. Whether you're gearing up for your next match or just love following the sport, this event had something for everyone.
