A 71-year-old soccer fan has been arrested following allegations of racist abuse directed at Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo during a Premier League match at Goodison Park. Everton confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, stating that Merseyside Police detained the individual on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense after both supporters and stadium staff reported the incident during Monday's game.
In a strong statement, Everton declared, "Racism and discrimination in all forms are completely unacceptable." The club's swift response drew praise from Manchester City, who welcomed the quick action taken by both Everton and law enforcement to identify the alleged perpetrator.
This is not the first time Semenyo has faced such abuse. The Ghana international, who is Black, previously reported being racially targeted by a Liverpool fan while playing for Bournemouth at Anfield in the season opener. That incident, which occurred during Bournemouth's 4-2 defeat, led to a pause in play and the ejection of the individual, who is now due in court later this year.
Manchester City also condemned online racist abuse directed at defender Marc Guéhi following Monday's thrilling 3-3 draw. The club emphasized, "We will continue to offer our full support to both Antoine and Marc and never accept discrimination of any kind in our game."
As the football community rallies against racism, incidents like these underscore the ongoing need for vigilance and decisive action to ensure the beautiful game remains inclusive for everyone.
