Jamie Smith is making a serious statement this season. The Surrey batsman continued his blistering early form with a classy 89, guiding his side to a hard-fought draw against a resilient Leicestershire at the Kia Oval. On a placid pitch that offered little to the bowlers, Surrey calmly batted through the final day, finishing on 263-4.
Smith, who already had centuries of 132 and 166 in his previous two knocks, looked effortless, striking 13 fours and two sixes in his 109-ball stay. He now boasts a staggering 396 runs from his first four County Championship innings this season, averaging an incredible 99. He was ably supported by England's Ollie Pope, who remained unbeaten on a composed 83, a fitting follow-up to his first-innings century.
While the match ended in a draw, the story was one of resilience from the newly-promoted Leicestershire. Facing the reigning champions and a three-time title winner in the last four years, they showed tremendous fight. After conceding 520 in Surrey's first innings, they responded with a mammoth 691 of their own, featuring centuries from Rishi Patel (164), Ben Cox (162), and Stephen Eskinazi (100).
The visitors even had a glimmer of hope on the final day, removing Surrey captain Rory Burns for a duck with the fifth ball and taking two quick wickets in an over after lunch. However, two rain delays and the sheer quality of Surrey's batting ultimately secured the draw. For Leicestershire, going toe-to-toe with the county powerhouse for four days will provide a massive confidence boost as they settle into Division One life.
