SLOCOMB, Ala. (WDHN)—Slocomb High School had a handful of students putting pen to paper on Friday.
Starting with a set of brothers that the Redtop faithful know well, and this duo won’t be breaking up anytime soon, as Dustin and Dylan Owens have both signed to join the team at Andrew College.
Dustin is signing as a wide receiver/tight end, and while injuries throughout his career may have affected the box scores, he was still a more-than-capable receiving threat for the Redtops.
Meanwhile, Dylan, who played on the other side of the ball at middle linebacker, was a menace for opposing players, racking up over 200 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 4 sacks in his career.
The brothers who started out doing Oklahoma drills in their front yard will get to keep sharing the field with one another at Andrew College, something they both say was an absolute dream.
“After we beat Geneva County in our last game, we took our pads off for the last time, and I asked him if we could play together again, and he said most definitely,” Dustin said. “We always wanted to do that. Dylan and I used to play in the front yard and act like we were playing for a college team.”
“We’ve always liked playing beside each other. We love each other to death, we’ll fight for each other to death,” Dylan said. “It feels good because I’ll have some family up there that I know, I’ll always have a friend right beside me, and I’m glad we get to go. I love being with him.”
And they would not be the only Redtops that Andrew College will be getting, as Kimberly Martinez also signed to join the Fighting Tigers to play soccer.
Now, Slocomb doesn’t have a school soccer team, but Martinez has spent many years playing club soccer here in the Wiregrass.
That experience and tape were more than enough for the Tigers to offer her a spot on the squad.
“As soon as I got the call from my coach, Johnson, I immediately went to my parents and said, ‘I’m gonna go visit this college,'” Martinez said. “This is a great opportunity for me, I have no high school soccer, and it’s great that they’re giving me an offer to go play there even if there’s not a team here at Slocomb High School.”
And last but certainly not least, we come to Rylee Nix, who will be heading just a few hours up Highway 231 to Huntingdon College, where she will join the school’s color guard team.
Rylee’s story as a redtop is one of perseverance; she didn’t make the color guard squad her 9th-grade year at Slocomb.
But instead of giving up and moving on, she fought to become better, made the team the next year, and that mindset is a major part of why she says she has made it to this signing day.
“When you don’t make something, it definitely defeats you a little. And I had to go home and take that in, and come back next year even stronger, and then I made it,” Nix said. “But I never would’ve thought that I would be going to a 4 year to be in band. I just have no words.”
