Utah added the first running back of its 2027 class on Tuesday night with the commitment of Skyline running back Jonah Mailei.

The University of Utah football program has officially landed its first running back for the 2027 recruiting class, with Skyline High School standout Jonah Mailei announcing his commitment on Tuesday night. The move adds a dynamic playmaker to the Utes' future backfield, and it's a signing that has fans buzzing about what's to come.

Mailei, a 6-foot, 200-pound back with a powerful build, has already proven himself as a versatile weapon on the field. Last season for the Eagles, he rushed for an impressive 1,197 yards—averaging 6.2 yards per carry—and scored eight touchdowns on the ground. But his value doesn't stop there: he also hauled in 25 receptions for 347 yards and four more scores out of the backfield, showcasing the kind of dual-threat ability that modern offenses crave.

His performance earned him an honorable mention on the Deseret News' 4A All-State team, a nod to his impact in a competitive classification. While Mailei is currently unranked by national recruiting services, his offer list—which includes Boise State and Oregon State—speaks volumes about his potential. Choosing Utah over those programs signals a strong belief in the Utes' vision for his development.

Football runs in the Mailei family. His father, Marcus, played running back at Weber State and even appeared in two games for the New Orleans Saints during their Super Bowl-winning season, giving Jonah a firsthand look at what it takes to compete at the highest level. That pedigree could be a major asset as he transitions to college ball.

With Mailei's commitment, head coach Morgan Scalley's 2027 class now stands at four players—the second offensive recruit to join the fold. He follows three-star wide receiver Money Parks, while the defensive side features three-star defensive lineman Tiki Teeples and three-star edge rusher Jackson Henderson. For Utah fans, this is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting recruiting cycle.
