It was a blast from the past on Friday as sports media titans Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith reignited their legendary debates on ESPN's First Take for the first time in a decade. The duo, who defined sports television with their fiery exchanges, wasted no time diving back into classic topics that made their "glory days" unforgettable—think Dallas Cowboys, New York Knicks, and, of course, LeBron James.

Bayless's return to the First Take studio marks a significant moment in his career. After years of going head-to-head with Shannon Sharpe on FS1's Undisputed, Bayless saw his time at Fox come to an end in 2024 following a lawsuit settlement and Sharpe's departure. These days, his media presence is mostly limited to his own podcast and occasional appearances with Gilbert Arenas. But Friday's reunion with Smith proved that the old magic is still there.

Smith, for his part, was more than happy to welcome Bayless back. After the show, he opened up about why he jumped at the chance to reunite with his former co-host. "It doesn't matter what has happened in my career on First Take; the fact is it wouldn't have happened without his support," Smith said. He recalled how Bayless fought for him during his early days at ESPN, starting with a single segment on Wednesdays before eventually pushing for Smith to become a permanent fixture on the show.

Bayless also shared his thoughts on their dynamic during an appearance on The Arena: Gridiron after Friday's broadcast. Laughing about their spirited back-and-forth, he praised Smith's tenacity. "The great thing about him is, he won't let anybody get away with any of that stuff to his face," Bayless said, hinting at the mutual respect that underpins their on-screen rivalry.

For fans of sports debate—and iconic sports personalities—this reunion was a reminder of why Bayless and Smith remain two of the most compelling voices in the game. Whether you're team Skip or team Stephen A., one thing is clear: some rivalries never get old.
