Macklin Celebrini will wear the "C" for Canada before he ever dons it for the San Jose Sharks. The 19-year-old phenom was named captain of Canada's World Championships squad on Sunday, with veterans Ryan O'Reilly and John Tavares serving as alternate captains. It's a massive vote of confidence for the young star, who is being asked to lead a roster packed with NHL talent including Mark Scheifele, Mathew Barzal, Robert Thomas, Morgan Rielly, Darnell Nurse, Evan Bouchard, and Cam Talbot.

Celebrini is widely viewed as the future of Canadian hockey, and this appointment only solidifies that status. The big question now: is this a preview of what's to come in San Jose? Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now has repeatedly stated he'd be surprised if Celebrini isn't named Sharks captain this fall. For a player already drawing comparisons to the game's elite, the leadership nod on the international stage feels like the next logical step.

Elsewhere in Sharks territory, the organization is keeping a close eye on the draft board. With the No. 2 pick in hand, mock drafts are increasingly pointing toward one specific prospect. Meanwhile, 2024 fourth-round pick Christian Kirsch has the Kitchener Rangers one win away from the Memorial Cup, boasting a dominant 15-2-0 record and a 3-0 series lead over the Barrie Colts in the OHL Finals. Not to be outdone, 2025 third-round pick Teddy Mutryn and his Moncton Wildcats are locked in a 1-1 series tie with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in the QMJHL Finals.

Celebrini, back in action for a Worlds tune-up, scored against France and continues to turn heads. As one fan put it, "He is a superstar with a fourth-line mentality. You can't learn that kind of talent—you're born with it." Whether it's leading Canada or potentially the Sharks, the message is clear: the future is here, and it's wearing a captain's letter.
