The Philadelphia 76ers turned up the energy at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Friday night, but it wasn't just the playoff action against the New York Knicks that had the crowd buzzing. In a heartwarming move, the team surprised hundreds of local heroes with free tickets to Game 3, making it a night to remember both on and off the court.
The Sixers gave away 250 tickets to teachers from Philadelphia and Camden, New Jersey, and another 250 to healthcare workers from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Penn Medicine. The timing couldn't have been better—it's Teacher Appreciation Week and Nurses Appreciation Week, and the team wanted to show their gratitude in a big way.
Among the lucky recipients was Erin Rambo, a fourth-grade teacher at Camden's Pride Charter School. A lifelong Sixers fan, Rambo was overcome with emotion when she learned she'd be attending the game. "I just was like overwhelmed and shocked and excited, and the tears just came out," she said. "Now that I can come here and experience this with my coworkers and my friends and get to see these guys play tough and hard like I know that they can, I'm just thrilled to be here."
The excitement even sparked some friendly competition at one school. Rebecca Phelen, a school administrator, shared that they held a Sixers-themed trivia contest to decide which teachers would get the tickets. "We did a trivia game with the 76ers trivia to see which teachers could go," she explained.
Mike Goings, the Sixers' vice president of social responsibility and fan development, explained the motivation behind the giveaway. "This is the perfect week to do it," he said. "We wanted to use the opportunity to really reward people in the community and get the most passionate fans in our building for our games this weekend."
For many, the night was about more than just basketball. Emily Foley of Haddon Township, who attended with her coworkers, summed it up perfectly: "To be able to do this with coworkers is very special, especially right now." It's a reminder that sometimes the best plays happen off the court—and that the right gear can make any game day feel special.
