Sioux Falls drops heartbreaker to SMSU

A season of grit and determination for the University of Sioux Falls softball team came to a heartbreaking halt on Thursday, as the Cougars fell 1-0 to Southwest Minnesota State in the opening round of the NSIC Softball Tournament at Bowden Field. In a classic pitcher's duel, a single solo home run in the third inning proved to be the difference-maker, ending Sioux Falls' 2026 campaign with a 28-28 overall record.

From the first pitch, it was clear this would be a battle of wills. Both Maddi Duncan for the Cougars and SMSU's Jordyn Marsh settled into a rhythm early, trading scoreless frames and keeping hitters off balance. The tension built with every inning, as fans on both sides sensed that one big play could swing the game.

That moment came in the bottom of the third, when SMSU's Grace Anderson connected on a solo shot to left center, sending the ball soaring over the fence and giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. It was the kind of swing that can define a postseason—a moment of pure power that silenced the Cougar dugout.

Sioux Falls had its own chance to answer in the top half of the same inning. Charlie Pryor sparked hope with a bunt single, then advanced to third after an error and a stolen base. With a runner in scoring position and the crowd on its feet, the Cougars couldn't deliver the tying run. Marsh then locked in, retiring the final 13 hitters she faced and limiting Sioux Falls to just one hit for the entire contest.

Despite the tough loss, the Cougars have plenty to be proud of. Finishing 16-14 in NSIC play and earning the No. 9 seed in the conference tournament, Sioux Falls showed resilience all season long. Key wins, record-breaking performances, and a strong senior class helped guide the program back to the postseason, proving that this team's heart and hustle are built to last.

As the season closes, the foundation is set for future success—and for fans, the memories of this hard-fought run will linger long after the final out.
