The countdown is on for the Sioux City Explorers as they push through the final days of spring training ahead of the 2026 season opener. With just over a week to go before they hit the road to face Chicago on May 15th, the team is sharpening its focus and building chemistry.

Last season, the Explorers entered the postseason as the top seed, but their championship hopes were cut short in the first round by the Sioux Falls Canaries—who ultimately fell in the title series. That early exit has left a hunger in the clubhouse, and the X’s are determined to write a different story this year.

With limited spring workouts remaining, the coaching staff is working overtime to integrate new faces while getting returning players back up to game speed. Outfielder Henry George emphasized the importance of leadership during this transition. “For me, I want to have an impact on the field, but more so in the clubhouse—especially with the rookies. Helping them adjust to pro ball as smoothly as possible is a big priority,” he said.

Steve Montgomery, the winningest manager in Explorers history, echoed that sentiment while also highlighting the team’s fresh energy. “Veteran leadership is always valuable, but I’m really excited about the youth and athleticism on this squad. We showed well yesterday, but at the end of the day, it all comes down to what you do on that 60 feet, 6 inches,” Montgomery said, referencing the distance from the pitcher’s mound to home plate.

While the X’s open the 2026 season on the road next Friday, fans should circle May 22nd on their calendars—that’s when the Explorers return to Sioux City for their home opener. With a blend of seasoned leadership and fresh talent, this team is poised to make some noise.
