World number one Jannik Sinner will resume his Italian Open semi-final clash against Daniil Medvedev on Saturday with a lead after it was interrupted by rain. Sinner, who is bidding to become the first Italian winner in Rome since 1976, had to overcome fitness issues from the second set onwards to go within just two games of victory, leading 6-2, 5-7, 4-2.

The Italian Open semi-final between world number one Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev is set to resume on Saturday, with the local favorite holding a commanding lead after rain interrupted play on Friday. Sinner, aiming to become the first Italian champion in Rome since 1976, leads 6-2, 5-7, 4-2 in a match that has already delivered plenty of drama.

Sinner started in blistering form, breaking Medvedev twice to take the first set 6-2 in just 33 minutes. The 22-year-old was chasing his 33rd consecutive win in Masters events and looked unstoppable early on. However, the second set brought a dramatic shift as fitness issues began to plague the Italian. Medvedev raced to a 3-0 lead, and Sinner's struggles became visible when he vomited in the corner of the court.

Showing the resilience that has defined his rise to the top, Sinner fought back to level the set at 3-3. But Medvedev, a former US Open champion and one of the toughest competitors on tour, broke again in a grueling six-minute game to take the set 7-5 and level the match at one set apiece.

Undeterred, Sinner came out firing in the third set, breaking Medvedev early to seize control at 4-2 before the rain arrived. The match will now resume on Saturday with Sinner just two games away from reaching the final. For fans watching around the world, this clash of two of the ATP Tour's biggest stars is proving to be the tournament's most compelling contest yet.
