Diego Simeone couldn't hide his disappointment after Atlético Madrid's Champions League journey came to an end at the hands of Arsenal, but the fiery Argentine manager was quick to tip his cap to the Premier League side's financial muscle and consistency.

The Colchoneros fell 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium in the second leg of their semifinal tie, sealing a heartbreaking exit from Europe's premier competition. For a team that had defied expectations to reach this stage, the defeat stung deeply.

"There's nothing to say — we're out," Simeone said after the match. "We congratulate Arsenal. They competed well and have a team and a coach that I really like. They follow a consistent approach, with significant financial resources that allow them to compete at this level."

The Atleti boss was pressed on a controversial refereeing decision involving Antoine Griezmann, but he refused to dwell on it. "The Griezmann incident is very obvious. We initially thought the referee made the right decision. I'm not going to focus on it — that would be making excuses, and I don't feel like doing that. It makes no sense to talk about that clear penalty."

Despite the bitter exit, Simeone took pride in his team's campaign. "Our fans and our players — we had a very good Champions League run. We gave it our all and went much further than anyone normally expected. It's a shame. We deserved better in the first leg, and today, at the very least, we should have forced extra time, which might have given us another chance."

Looking back at the two-legged tie, the coach pointed to missed opportunities. "In the first leg, we had chances to score and didn't take them. Here, in the second half, we improved, got more into the game, played in their half, and created opportunities. All those little details that sometimes go your way — this time, they didn't."

Simeone reserved special praise for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, who has transformed the Gunners into genuine European contenders. "Congratulations to Arsenal — they deserve it. They've been fighting for years to get to the final. Mikel Arteta has done an incredible job so far, so I'm happy for them."

When asked about his own emotions, the ever-passionate Simeone struck a surprisingly calm tone. "If we got knocked out, it's because our opponent deserved to go through. If you ask me how I feel, I feel calm. My team gave everything, but we weren't clinical. We were competing with a team that had so much strength and talent."

For Atlético, it's a case of what might have been — but for neutrals and football fans alike, this tie showcased the very best of Champions League drama, where fine margins and big moments decide who moves on and who goes home.
