The world of curling is saying goodbye to a legend. Silvana Tirinzoni, the Swiss skip who has held the world No. 1 ranking, has announced her retirement from the sport at age 46.
"This decision is a very difficult one," Tirinzoni shared in an emotional statement. "It hurts. There are tears... It might seem crazy to step away while being part of the number one ranked team in the world, but I feel that I've pushed myself to my absolute limits."
Tirinzoni's career is the definition of a champion's journey, culminating in a historic silver medal at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Games. Her Swiss team's thrilling 6-5 final against Sweden ended a 20-year Olympic medal drought for Switzerland in women's curling and made Tirinzoni the oldest woman ever to win a Winter Olympic medal in any sport.
Her dominance, however, was built on the world championship stage. Tirinzoni led her rink to a record-shattering four consecutive world titles from 2019 to 2023, a period that included a staggering 42-game winning streak at the worlds. This era of supremacy cemented her team's place among the greatest in the sport's history.
Reflecting on her remarkable run, Tirinzoni offered a perspective every athlete can understand. "Looking back, I can't say I enjoyed every single minute," she wrote. "There were tough moments, setbacks and challenges... But even in the darkest times of my career, one thing was always clear: I love Curling."
Her retirement marks the end of an era, closing the chapter on a career defined by relentless excellence, record-breaking achievements, and a profound love for the game.
