In a thrilling do-or-die showdown, the Minnesota Frost showed their championship mettle once again, rallying past the Montreal Victoire 3-1 on Friday night to force a decisive Game 5 in the PWHL playoffs.
Defender Sidney Morin emerged as an unlikely hero, netting two third-period goals to erase a 1-0 deficit. Her first came from near the blue line, beating goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens to tie the game with 11:55 remaining. Then, with 7:59 left, she struck again on the power play—Minnesota's first with the man advantage since Game 1—ripping a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle to put the Frost ahead 2-1.
Morin's playoff surge is especially remarkable given her regular-season stats: she entered the postseason with just four career goals in 84 games, none this season. Now she has four in these playoffs alone.
Kelly Pannek, the PWHL's regular-season goal-scoring leader with 33, sealed the win with an empty-netter from Minnesota's own end with 1:07 left, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
The Frost's resilience is nothing new. They improved to 5-0 all-time in playoff elimination games, with the previous four wins coming during their 2024 Walter Cup championship run. They're also 4-1 in Game 4 history.
Montreal had struck first just 1:13 into the third period, when Maureen Murphy scored her first goal of the playoffs. Hayley Scamurra's wraparound attempt bounced off goaltender Maddie Rooney's pads, and Murphy buried the rebound. The Victoire had been nearly unbeatable when scoring first this season, posting a 19-3 record in such games.
Now, it all comes down to one game. Montreal will host Minnesota on Monday with a spot in the Walter Cup finals on the line. For the Frost, it's just another chance to prove they're at their best when their backs are against the wall.
