The hockey world is holding its breath as Sidney Crosby enters a familiar phase: the waiting game. After wrapping up his 21st season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the legendary captain is in no rush to decide what comes after the 2026-27 campaign.
"Just wait and see," Crosby told reporters during exit interviews on Friday. "I haven’t thought that far ahead, but we’ll just wait and see."
This cautious approach is nothing new for the 37-year-old. Last summer, he let the speculation simmer for two and a half months before finally putting pen to paper on a two-year extension covering 2025-26 and 2026-27. That contract will take him right up to his 40th birthday—but what happens next remains a mystery.
"Whether we see a 40-plus Crosby in 2027-28 is a bridge he hasn’t come close to crossing yet," one team insider noted. "He just finished Year 21 in Pittsburgh. Year 22 is locked in. But Year 23? That’s still up in the air."
Interestingly, Crosby would be eligible to sign another extension as early as July 1 of this year—a full season ahead of schedule. But don’t expect a rushed decision. The longtime Penguins star has made it clear he’s in "wait and see" mode for anything beyond next season.
One silver lining for Pittsburgh fans: with the Penguins back in the playoffs and showing enough promise to keep Crosby engaged, there won’t be any trade rumors swirling out of Canada this summer. It’s looking more and more like he’ll finish his Hall of Fame career wearing the only NHL jersey he’s ever known.
On the health front, Crosby offered some reassuring news despite battling leg injuries since February. "I’m going to have discussions [Friday] and talk to doctors and things like that," he said. "I feel pretty good." He also dismissed any talk of offseason surgery, leaving fans hopeful for a full recovery and another strong campaign.
For now, the message is clear: enjoy the 2026-27 season while it lasts. As for what happens after that? We’ll all be waiting—and watching—right along with him.
